Initial contact will be by phone or e-consult but we will continue to see patients in person, in the same "Covid secure" manner as we have undertaken since March.
However, in order to help keep everyone safe, please do not come to the surgery unless you have a booked appointment or have been asked to do so by practice staff or your GP.
COVID VACCINATION CLINICS
update 21 January 2021
We have been advised today that we are not to receive a vaccine delivery next week and that the expected delivery has been redirected to sites in other areas who are not as advanced as we are in the vaccination programme. This unfortunately means that we were not able to reopen bookings on Wednesday of this week as we had intended.
However we have now managed to secure permission to allow us to deliver some vaccines (from this week's delivery) from a site in Clevedon next week. This is for the remaining patients over the age of 80 who cannot travel to Portishead, but we will also be able to include the remaining patients aged 75-79 who have not yet booked into a clinic. We will be setting these clinics up today and we will therefore reopen the booking line mobile from Friday at 11.00 am.
The Covid vaccine is currently only being delivered to two sites in our Primary Care Network Area.
Clevedon, Portishead and Pill patients are currently required to attend for their vaccinations in Portishead.
The number of clinics that we can run and therefore the number of patients we can invite for vaccination is entirely dependent upon the number of vaccines which are allocated to our site each week. This number varies from week to week. The allocation of vaccines to each practice is based upon our relative practice populations, and each practice provides an equivalent proportion of clinical and non clinical staff to help man each clinics at Portishead.
We have now given first doses of vaccination to 65% of our patients "over 80 years of age" and booked in 75% of those aged 75 - 79.
We have also completed first vaccinations in all of the Nursing and Care Homes, along with approximately half of the care home staff. We will be vaccinating residents in the learning disability homes this week and the housebound next week with vaccines which have been set aside for this purpose.
To avoid blocking the main practice telephone lines, and to ensure that patients who urgently need to speak to a GP can still do so we have provided mobile phone numbers for patients to book their Covid vaccinations. These are manned between 11.00 and 4.00 every week day. We send out invitations in batches according to the number of vaccines we have been allocated and therefore, if you receive a letter, there will be an appointment available, so there is no need to rush to phone as soon as the line opens. If it is engaged please try again as you will get through. Please do not leave messages or texts on the mobile as we do not have the staff time available to respond to these.
Patients who are aged over 70 and clinically vulnerable patients may also have received a letter from the NHS inviting them to attend for vaccination at Ashton Gate in Bristol. If they would to prefer to attend there rather than Portishead or Clevedon then they are very welcome.
Patients who are employed in eligible health and social care, patient facing roles, are also able to book into some of these vaccination clinics. We understand that the Government will be reviewing the groups in this cohort and other professions may become eligible in due course.

We are aware that the very significant increase in outgoing calls from GPs to patients, necessary as a result of the Covid measures, has had a significant impact upon the number of lines available to take incoming calls, resulting in delays for patients trying to get through to the practice.
We have been working very hard to remedy this, and now have a new system in place which allows 300-400 outgoing calls per day to bypass the main telephone system.
We are pleased to say that our waiting times are now significantly reduced

Please be aware that unlike shops and other public areas we are still subject to very strict infection control in the practice.
We have many vulnerable and at risk patients who have to come to the surgery for essential dressings, injections and appointments and therefore it is essential that we keep the risk of infection to these and other patients and our staff by limiting entry to the practice to those patients with appointments only.
Please do not try to come to the surgery to book an appointment, sort out a prescription query or any other non-appointment issue.

We would urge all patients to respect these arrangements.
We have now recommenced routine blood tests, required as part of chronic disease or medication reviews, within a specific time frame.
Patients will be contacted directly by phone to arrange these. (Please do not try to arrange these yourself).
Letters will be sent to patients, who do not need a blood test, but who may need to speak to a clinician as part of a review, to ask them to book a telephone consultation.
Routine smears, and long term contraception fitting are now available again and appointments are being arranged to prioritise the most urgent. As with everything else capacity is limited due to the time needed for changing PPE and cleaning the room between patients and therefore we cannot offer as many appointments every week as we would have done pre Covid 19.
Please remember that if you do need to come to the surgery for an appointment you will be required to wear a face covering before you will be allowed to enter the building and you will be asked a number of specific questions (even if you come to the surgery for a regular procedure you will still need to answer these questions). You may also be asked to remain in the car when you arrive and to park in designated places within the car park. Please adhere to these requests as they are for your safety. We have recently opened more rooms for face to face consultations. To access these you will need to enter by a side door into the main waiting room. Please ensure that you walk inside the metal barriers to avoid to protect you from cars entering and leaving the staff car park.

NHS 111 has an online coronavirus service that can tell you if you need medical help and advise you what to do.
Use this service if:
- you think you might have coronavirus
- You’ve been in close contact with someone with coronavirus.
Do not go to a GP surgery, pharmacy or hospital. Call 111 if you need to speak to someone
Like the common cold, coronavirus infection usually occurs through close contact with a person with novel coronavirus via cough and sneezes or hand contact. A person can also catch the virus by touching contaminated surfaces if they do not wash their hands. Testing of suspected coronavirus cases is carried out in line with strict guidelines. This means that suspected cases are kept in isolation, away from public areas of GP surgeries, pharmacies and hospitals and returned home also in isolation. Any equipment that comes into contact with suspected cases are thoroughly cleaned as appropriate. Specific guidance has also been shared with NHS staff to help safeguard them and others. Patients can be reassured that their safety is a top priority.
Everyone is being reminded to follow Public Health England advice to:
- Always carry tissues with you and use them to catch your cough or sneeze. Then bin the tissue, and wash your hands, or use a sanitiser gel.
- Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after using public transport. Use a sanitiser gel if soap and water are not available.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands.
- Maintain a 2m distance from everyone
- Comply with the current legislation on remaining at home other than for essential work, shopping for essentials, daily exercise, or for medical care.
Avoid close contact with people who are unwell
Getting the right appointment
Sometimes the GP isn’t really the best person to see. You could be seen and treated quicker and more appropriately by a nurse practitioner / physician associate / acute care practitioner or it may be better to have an assessment with an associated physiotherapist or a pharmacist. In some cases, the GP practice might not be the right place at all for your query.
Our receptionists and admin staff are trained to ensure that they can help you get to the right service and the right appointment with the most appropriate clinician.
So the next time you call for a GP appointment, these trained frontline staff will ask you what the problem is. This isn't to be nosy but it's so they can help get you to the right health professional within or outside the practice for your needs.
They also have a multitude of information and knowledge about services outside of the GP practice that can help too if you need that.
Care Quality Commission Report
We are pleased to advise that following our recent inspection the Practice was rated as Good across all categories. The inspectors praised the leadership and governance culture; staff understanding of their responsibilities to raise concerns; the use of proactive methods to improve patient outcomes; the positive feedback from patients; close working with other organisations to plan services that met patient's needs and the implementation of suggestions for improvement from patients and the patient participation group.

What can be discussed using a telephone consultation?
GPs would normally discuss routine blood and hospital results, fit note renewals and medication reviews over the telephone. They are able to undertake some follow-up appointments by telephone and they also prescribe for conditions such as UTIs (where they do not need to examine you) over the telephone. The reception staff should be able to guide you as to when a telephone conversation is appropriate.
Named Accountable GP
The GP contract requires practices to allocate a named, Accountable GP for all patients (including children), who will take lead responsibility for the co-ordination of all appropriate servers required under the contract. Your record will be coded to identify your accountable GP.

The practice supports medical research projects and works in partnership with the University of Bristol and other organisations. We may invite you to participate, but will not release your details without your consent.
