Travelling abroad with medication

Planning Ahead

If you are travelling abroad, please make sure you request your medication in good time before you leave

Travelling for Less Than 3 Months

We may be able to supply 3 months of your regular medication for while you are away.

This additional supply of medicine is at your GP’s discretion. It will depend on your medical condition being stable and whether your medication requires regular monitoring.

NHS prescriptions are intended to support patients living in the UK and are not designed to provide ongoing medication for frequent or extended travel abroad.

  • Requests for additional supplies for travel should be occasional, and repeated requests may not be approved.
  • Patients who spend significant periods abroad may need to make arrangements for ongoing healthcare and prescriptions in the country where they are staying.

In line with guidance from the NHS, CQC and GMC, prescriptions for controlled medications are usually limited to a maximum of 30 days. In some cases, a shorter prescription may be issued depending on your medication or medical condition.

GPs cannot prescribe medications for possible travel-related conditions, such as travel sickness, antibiotics in case of infection, diazepam for flying anxiety

Travelling for More Than 3 Months

Patients leaving the UK for more than 3 months are no longer entitled to ongoing NHS treatment or prescriptions while abroad.
If you are travelling or living abroad for longer than 3 months, the NHS can only provide enough medication to allow you to travel and arrange ongoing care in your destination country.

We recommend taking:

  • A copy of your repeat medication list
  • A translated prescription if travelling to a non-English-speaking country

Taking Medication Abroad

Some medicines may be restricted or controlled in other countries. It is your responsibility to check the rules for the country you are visiting before travelling.
Controlled drugs, such as morphine, may require additional documentation or a licence from the UK Home Office if travelling with larger quantities.
